SEO Basics

While it might often seem that SEO, or Search Engine Optimisation, is something of a mystical form of black magic, the simple truth is that through ethical hard work in the on page and off page optimisation of your website, SEO can lead to a sustainable and ongoing source of targeted website traffic that is virtually unparalleled by any other form of online marketing. It is such a highly respected form of traffic generation because visitors are targeted and qualified but also because the traffic is considerably less expensive with a far greater return on investment than other forms of marketing.
Components Of Effective SEO
SEO can be broken down into two basic components – on page and off page optimisation; both of which will prove essential to an effective, long running campaign. To start with, you will need to undertake some off page optimisation in the form of keyword research, which is used to identify the most profitable and beneficial of SEO keywords to target. These keywords will be used throughout the life of your website, or at least as long as you intend to continue using SEO to market the pages of your site.
On Page Optimisation
Once you have a good list of keywords and have determined which pages of your site will benefit most from the use of which keywords you will then begin the on page optimisation. This requires the writing of high quality SEO content as well as ensuring that meta tags and HTML tags, file names, and other factors include these keywords. You should also ensure that every page includes good navigation. Good navigation means that human and search engine visitors are able to read and follow the links to other pages.
Indexing Your Site
Following the on page optimisation of your site, the next stage to SEO reverts back to off page factors, this time in the shape of indexing your site. This can be done either by generating your first inbound link to one of your pages or through the submission of a sitemap to the search engines. Either method will prove effective and once you have done this you shouldn’t hang around waiting for the results but should, instead begin a link building campaign (off page optimisation).
Link Building
Link building requires the generation of beneficial inbound links to each of your pages. Every page that you have optimised with its own keywords will require its own link profile consisting of relevant links from high quality pages using the appropriate keywords in the anchor text. Generally speaking, the more links you can get and the higher the quality of those links the better your site will perform in the search engine results.
Ongoing SEO Practices
SEO is an ongoing process. As well as continuing to build links you should determine beneficial methods to continue adding new SEO content to your website. Whether you choose to do this through the use of a blog or through the addition of more SEO pages it will require additional off page and on page optimisation on your part so that you continue to enjoy a fresh source of traffic for your website.
