SEO to optimize your recession

There are many who feel the same pains caused by recession, even if they have taken time to recognise potential opportunities recession can provide and put steps in place to take full advantage of them.

Recession, more than at any other time, is the time to use SEO as your marketing tool of choice.  At this time step up your urgency to implement SEO, make it a priority and get whatever resources your need to make it happen.  Whether your company provides your own in-house SEO support, you outsource, or are even if your company is the one providing the outsourcing, use the opportunities that come along with recession to get the attention of those who make the decisions, and make them understand that SEO is actually the most cost effective solution during this time.

Recession causes reduction of spending.  Consumers lose confidence in the economy as well as their source of livelihood and their investments too.  But there is always a need for necessities and essentials and these have to purchased, recession or not.  So, recession does not mean a total stop in buying, it means an adjustment to spending and cutting back but money is still circulating and changing hands.

What goes?

People will still spend on their homes and their lifestyle, the just may not spend as much.  Instead of buying a new home they may renovate and this includes so called luxuries like furniture and electronic equipment.  The thinking is that they would rather entertain at home and save money.

A Business may decide not to expand, but they will spend money on upgrading their existing office space, including hardware and computer equipment. They may also decide to cut back on staff and decide to outsource instead.

Travel and entertainment requirement change too.  Instead of dining out on a regular basis, people may decide to eat at home which may mean taking cooking lessons and create exotic recipes at home which means they will need to update their cooking utensils.  Instead of a yearly international holiday destination people may explore their own country and may even invest in a holiday home instead.

Nobody is comfortable with reduced expenditure and they find ways around it that will afford a happy compromise.

What replaces?

Even basic spending takes on a new dimension as people comparison shop and become more selective in their choices, and it is one more opportunity for SEO by offering consumers an alternative way to find information about quality and availability of the products they are interested in, saving them the money and time they would have used to manually shop around.

This may have an impact on the words they use in their searches and gives you an opportunity to refresh your keywords, introducing words such as bulk, or quality or price instead then integrating them into your Meta tags and page content.  What this does for your website is that it will increase your optimisation.

Recession is an excellent opportunity to reach out to new customers by offering better deals and announcing them via RSS feeds.  Use recession as an opportunity to get free advertising, piggy back on articles which report on the status or progress or the woes of recession.  Become and expert on it and offer ways for people to stretch their budget.  Get your message out into the media and into people’s homes.
