Sharpen Your SEO Competitive Skills
March 10th, 2009 by Dan
Sharpening ones skills is something every member of society should do to stay up-to-speed if not ahead in their respective fields. SEO is a massively diverse and often underestimated field that is continually changing, and it is essential to always be aware of new changes and developments in this field. The skills set alone required to truly master Search Engine Optimisation is a frightening prospect. A firm grasp of the essentials are vital before even thinking about fine tuning.
Some experts say
Some experts even claim that trying to focus on the small stuff is a waste of time and resources and the effort put in is no where near worth the minimal change in rankings. These same experts say that good Search Engine Optimisation is all about the big stuff and with like all major business marketing strategies it about building credibility, trust in your brand. It is important to focus on this first and mastering this ability before you can move on to tweaking and fine tuning.
Building credibility is not an instant task, but rather is formed over months of hard, well thought out work. The “basics†still have to be covered extremely well before any tag alterations and assessing of algorithms etc would even be worth looking into. These basics are simple; design a user friendly website that is designed for your users needs and wants in mind but at the same time takes into consideration what the search engines look for, use applicable information that is updated regularly and is well linked to similarly relevant pages. Then a PPC strategy and other off-site avenues must be implemented. Keyword research must be of the highest standard with continued monitoring for changes and additions.
To improve your skills you have to stay active, remember it’s your site, you can do what you want with it, tweak what you want, and test what you want. The more you do, the more you try the more you will learn. Never hesitate in trying out new SEO Techniques, the only caution to be aware of is that search engines change algorithms very often and your site can move up and down with out any changes to your sight, so always be aware of what you are doing, because it may have nothing to do with a change in your rankings. The key to a great sportsman is his hours of practice, the same applies to Search Engine Optimisation.
Don’t be afraid
The hardest thing to understand is why people are so scared to try things. Don’t be! You have nothing to loose and there is nothing you can reasonably do that can’t be undone. This filed of expertise is not simple in practice but at the same time is terribly simple in goal. The goal of any website, business or SEO strategy is to identify and understand the customer and the customer’s needs, and then attempting to deliver solutions to those customers or users. Find out what your customers needs are, and then master getting those needs met.
