Three Common Forum Mistakes
August 24th, 2010 by Peter
Forums are playing an important role in the search engine optimisation campaigns of many businesses. Website owners which are using forums correctly are gaining exposure for their businesses, developing their brands and directing traffic to their websites. These are significant benefits and this is why it is important forums are used correctly when implemented as an SEO technique.
Unfortunately, many business owners do not use forums appropriately and make simple mistakes which reduce the effectiveness of their forum participation. It is important to be aware of these mistakes so if you begin using forums, you don’t make the same common errors others continue to do.
The first mistake often made by business owners is that they try to sell their products and promote their business within a forum without offering others any assistance or content of value. This is not effective because the majority of forum users are participating because they have a problem of some kind or have an issue to discuss.
They are looking for valuable and helpful information and not a sales pitch and this is where many site owners go wrong. It is important to remember the purpose of the forums and to be fully aware of what a post is about and what will be considered valuable before you create any content for it.
The second mistake often made is that site owners know they have to provide useful and valuable content but fail do to so effectively. This is because their information and thoughts are not expressed simply and clearly. Even when you are an expert on your business subject, you must remember others are not and may struggle to understand something you are trying to explain. You have to make it as easy as possible for them to understand the information you are giving to them if it is going to work effectively. Be careful with the language you use and ensure your sentences can be easily read and understood.
The third mistake made by some site owners using forums is that they create useful and valuable posts, their posts are thorough and clear but they forget to include a link to their website. Whilst using forums is not about aggressive self-promotion, including a link to your website when relevant and when your business could be useful is perfectly acceptable. A link like this can help to direct relevant traffic to your website and encourage the search engines to explore your web pages too.
Many business owners are afraid to use links but if appropriate, including links to your site can actually be hugely advantageous. A number of forum users you help will have an interest in your business and will want to explore your company a little further. Make it easy for them to do so.
