Three deadly sins of search engine spamming
May 15th, 2009 by Dan
Online marketing is competitive and intense. Entrepreneurs use all legal way to promote their business to achieve good ranking. Organic SEO, as well as paid marketing strategies are used all the time to give websites the best exposure. Unfortunately it’s not good enough for some. They are not content to do things by the book and use methods to cheat to artificially boost them to the top.
They always get found out and face the consequences. This makes things complicated for website owners who do things right. Search Engine spamming has resulted in stringent measures all must follow now. There are three common spamming techniques that cause endless problems for those guilty of them
Text invisible to the human eye
Hidden text is aimed solely at the search engine spiders as humans cannot see the text at all. The spiders can see white text on a white page for instance, while human visitors to that website are blissfully unaware. The hidden text normally is not constructed sentences, but lists of keywords and all the variations of those keywords.
The spiders scanning the hidden text can result in artificially induced higher ranking. Often hidden text is disguised in the HTML code of the website as well. Hidden text will get your website busted so fast you will forget to breathe.
Those irritating doorway pages
Doorway pages are nothing but blatant advertisements splashed across full pages. These pages can stand on their own and are inserted in front of the home page of a website. It has one purpose only; to land the web page high enough in the search results. Its aim is for a searcher to click on that link to get you to come to that specific website. You may be shopping for a designer handbag, click on that link and land on a page that is crammed with adverts.
Nothing but adverts meaningless to what you are looking for with a simple statement somewhere on the pages saying, for handbags click here. The searcher has been duped as these pages provide nothing of quality; no information, no products listings or contact info.
It is highly annoying for the searcher and the search engine loathes being duped as well. It lessens the quality of search results. Doorway pages lead to nowhere and they are always found, yet people still try hoodwinking the Search Engines.
Mirror sites clog up the Internet
Mirror sites are duplicate websites by an entrepreneur. It does not seem deceitful as each mirror site promotes a specific item sold by that business with keywords for that specific item. At face value this seems an innocent way to get traffic. Logically though, there are millions upon millions of websites on the Internet with literally billions of web pages.
A business selling a thousand different items can have a thousand different websites this way. This weakens the quality of Search Egine results though and that is a huge problem for everyone. You will be found out and face the consequences. Spamming tactics are not tolerated by the Search Engines, so the choice is really yours if you want to risk losing your business or not.
