What Do You Think Of Your Competitors?

When running a search engine optimisation campaign, it is easy to think all of your time and effort has to be focused on your own business. After all, SEO is about getting your website ranked highly in the search results, developing your brand within the online community and increasing traffic to your website.

However, if you do become wrapped up in your company and your company alone, it is highly likely your SEO campaign will fail. This is because your competitors are of great significance.

If using SEO, a business owner must be aware of who their competitors are, what they offer, what they do and the search engine optimisation techniques they are using. The behaviour and actions of the main rivals of your business can have a major impact on the performance of your company and so must be monitored carefully.

Evaluating your competitors from the perspective of a customer can be hugely advantageous. It can help you to view the websites and companies of others in a different light and help you to compare these businesses to yours more easily and successfully.

Carry out searches using the search engines. Use relevant keywords and search terms you know your target audience use and then examine the results displayed. Look out for which websites are ranked in the top positions for the most searches and which are obviously running successful search engine optimisation campaigns. See which companies catch your eye and then get ready to explore them a little more thoroughly.

Visit their websites and read the content they have displayed on their web pages. Is this information helpful? Is it useful? After reading it do you have a clear idea of what the business is offering? These are important questions because it is what visitors to websites like this will be looking for.

Explore the products they have on offer and assess the quality of the items, the selection on offer, the cost and any other appropriate details. Knowing what your main rivals are selling and how they are doing it is valuable information.

When on the website of a competitor, it is also important to consider how easy it is to navigate your way around. Are links to other pages displayed clearly? Do these links work? Being able to explore a website thoroughly is extremely important for visitors who are potential customers.

Make a note of all of this kind of information from the different sites you visit and then compare these businesses with your own. Look out for strengths and weaknesses in each and make your website and your SEO campaign as good as it can be. Knowing what competitors are doing can raise the bar and help motivate you to outperform them with your SEO campaign.

    I like the logic behind the post (looking at your competitors’ offers through consumers’ eyes), but it seems that most of the tasks (searching, reading, analyzing) will have to be done “manually”. Or are you employing some competitive intelligence tools (like Compete, etc) for this?
