Can You Afford Not to SEO?

February 14th, 2010 by

The question most businesses ask themselves is whether they can afford to SEO. The real question, cheesy as it is, is whether they can afford not to SEO. In analysing other case histories, what most businesses find is that cutting out SEO from their budgets is a false economy. While your business can survive without paid search advertising, it cannot survive if it never appears in the prominent search results pages.

How search engines operate

Sites can reach a decent position in the search engine results pages without the help of SEO. It’s important to remember that search engines came first in the evolution of this particular area of the net. Once sites noticed that search engines drove the majority of the traffic to their pages, they began to figure out ways to attract and develop a better relationship with the search engines, but the search engines still led the way. Sites are picked and chosen for results based on whatever fits best at the time, and the best site for the user’s needs wins.

Believe it or not, this is what search engine optimisation is all about. Good SEO is about enhancing the organic features of a site and removing any blocks that might prevent the search engines from assessing the site as human users do. It’s all about presenting an equivalent picture to humans and search engines.

Taking it further with SEO

SEO does take things a step further than letting a site grow independently. A good SEO consultant will do their best to improve the user experience on a site. This is done because users are ultimately the ones that count. A site that appeals to search engines alone won’t get it very far.

The emphasis on quality user experience is one of the major differences between SEO and paid advertising. Both can get increased traffic for your site, but only SEO works to turn traffic into conversions. You can talk to us at SEO Consult about your site’s improvements. In this, SEO has obvious benefits over normal advertising, in the way that a long-term exercise plan has benefits over a quick hit of caffeine.

SEO also takes things further by laying down foundations for continued site success. The tactics implemented on a site’s pages to make it more attractive to search engines almost inadvertently make the site work more efficiently in the long term.

Does SEO figure in your online plans?

The development of a website usually represents a significant investment. However, having a website alone won’t get you the online presence you may be after. Website success rests on traffic, and traffic rates rest on the search engines. SEO is the missing element to make this path a fruitful one.

Many businesses are put off search engine optimisation by the long-term plan it requires. SEO should be looked at as an investment in your online presence. In the real world, you wouldn’t balk at paying for office space on top of advertising for your business. On the net, you probably shouldn’t turn away from an investment in your online health.
