Copy and keywords

October 13th, 2009 by

Some website owners tend to think that they can forego intensive keyword research as long as they have brilliant copy to back them up. The next question is whether this is true or not. There is no substitute for great copy, not even if you stuff the text full of potent keywords. Good content is what attracts and keeps visitors to your website, it helps spread the world about your website and it simply cannot be replaced by anything else.

However, great copy cannot stand alone either; you need keywords in order to get that great copy noticed in the first place. Some people also think that when they write excellent copy, they will automatically use targeted keywords for their subject. Unfortunately, that isn’t so; you can write fantastic copy and not use a single targeted keyword or keyword phrase at all.

A lot of everything

Before you jump on the keyword overuse bandwagon, stop and learn the value of ‘a lot of everything’. When it comes to SEO, in most cases a little simply does not cut it. You need to go all out and that is exactly what you have to do when you combine copy and keywords. You need to write excellent copy and lace it with strategically researched and placed keywords. Neither can stand alone as an island of success. They need to work together in order to make your SEO work to the best possible extent.

Keywords for success

You need to research your keywords very carefully. Your keywords are how your target audience finds your website. If you make the wrong choice of keywords, the wrong target market will find your website. You will end up with no quality traffic and no conversions either.

You need to look into all the keywords related to your product, business or service. Look at high traffic, popular keywords and look at the lesser searched long-tailed ones too. Look at using both types and using keywords that will drive quality traffic your way. You need to be able to tap into what your target market is searching, what keywords they are using to get to your competitors’ websites and how to use it to your own advantage.

Related topics and ideas

Not everyone in your target market is going to be searching using the direct keywords that you and your competitors are using in your copy. Some of them will be searching for related topics, news and subtopics of your overall interest. For instance, if you sell vacuum cleaners members in your target market may be searching for information about vacuum cleaner bags.

That is just one example of one subtopic that is within one sphere of interest. Including keywords and copy that pertain to these subtopics that are of interest to your audience increases your visibility and the value of your website to your visitors. If your website has more value to your visitors, you become more valuable to the search engines and your SERP rank will increase. As you can see, copy and keywords work hand in hand to bring you sound search engine optimization.
