Domain Names and SEO
September 8th, 2009 by Nick
It is no easy feat finding the right domain name. Either they are already taken or they are going to cost you a bundle. Yet with a little creativity you can get one that is easy to remember and is in line with your branding yet has a little bit extra to help you with your SEO campaign. Search engines do after all give credo in rankings for URL’s that contain keywords in the domain.
What is a good domain name?
Ideally a domain name should be two or three words tacked together. This makes them easy to remember and they are able to create a bond with your audience. They are simple and easy to remember too and are actually not that difficult to find.
Having a domain made up of keywords is easy for your audience to visualise and if they can remember it and be able to type it in directly you will benefit from repeat traffic. It is a fact that good domain names found in search engines are clicked on more often because people remember the brand.
Search engine algorithms seem to prefer domains that contain keywords. While this cannot be proven it is implied. For example your business lies in used scrap metal yet your company name is something like Global Suppliers of Quality Materials. A domain that looks something like usedsteel.com will fair better than globalsuppliersofqualitymaterials.com will. While offering a similar meaning this domain is long and doesn’t use words that directly relate to service offerings.
If you try for a domain and it is taken try to find other domains that are similar. This may give you good alternatives for related terms to use for your keywords. You might also come across domains that are for sale that will suit your need. GoDaddy.com offers this feature.
Your domain needs to be clear about what your business is about, it needs to be easy to brand and easy to remember.
Choosing SEO friendly Domain Names
It is hard to imagine building a successful business without a website, yet not that long ago this was the case. The reason? There was no internet!
However today it is not enough to just set up a website and generate business from it. There is a lot involved in driving traffic to your site and create an online presence. Having a perfectly created website needs help to get it noticed. It has to go through procedures that get it indexed in search engines. This means putting SEO procedures in place. One of which is SEO friendly domain names. Before someone hits your WebPages they have to find you. Your domain name is in effect your address. The easier to find the more traffic you will get. Yet domain names are also what get your website ranked and indexed on a search engine.
