Flush the Flash to Benefit From SEO

October 6th, 2009 by

Don’t you just love those flash websites, the ones with all the cool flash on them? Sure, flash sites look good, they may be impressive but they are not all that. As much as you may glorify flash websites, they really don’t deserve that pedestal from and SEO point of view. There is so much else that you can do in order to create a brilliant website. There is so much else out there that is so much more SEO friendly. So forget about being hooked on flash, forget about sabotaging your own optimization efforts and start thinking of the future of your website.

It is about the visitor

Visitors come to a website because of an amalgamation of various aspect, they need to come together poetically to make a masterpiece. Having a flash website means that you pay more attention to the impressive factor of the website and not enough to the SEO factor. Remember, your website is all about the visitor. It is about what they want, what will attract them and what will keep them.

Flash may look like a promising attraction but when it comes to loading that website, it becomes a very unattractive aspect of your website. The biggest problems with flash websites is that they often take ages to load. This tries your visitor’s patience and can even cause them to leave and look for what they want elsewhere. Another problem with flash websites is that they can irritate visitors. Irritating your visitors is an incredibly bad idea because it is one of the fastest ways to get them to leave.

Bad for optimization

Flash is not always compatible with your visitors but it is certainly not compatible with a good SEO program. One of the main reasons a flash website is so disliked by the search engines is because they see it as a single page image file. Search engines cannot see images, which bodes badly for flash website owners. Search engines can only read and see text. A flash webpage is seen as having no text on it when the search engines look at it.

No text means no content to offer and nothing to rank your website according to. Another problem with flash based websites is that the URL for each and every page is exactly the same. The engines see this as having absolutely no internal link structure. All of this makes your flash website enemy number one as far as the search engines are concerned. Once you are on the enemy list, your website will not enjoy any visibility or promotion. No visibility or promotion on the internet means that your website is dead in the water and will not receive much traffic.

Conclusion

Flash websites are a very bad idea for anyone who wants to prescribe to good SEO practice. Flash just makes life more difficult for yourself. Speak to your web designer and your optimizer in order to make the best choice as to what type of website to create. Professional advice is invaluable when you are creating your business website.
