November 7th, 2008 by Nick
There is more information out there about SEO, PPC, SEM and every other web orientated acronym then any human being could ever read in one lifetime, and if one could I doubt they could actually my head or tales out of it. There are articles that contradict each other and articles that guarantee success etc.
With regards to Search Engine Optimisation, there are a few rules, a couple of facts you need to know and areas or methods you have to avoid. If a person hears the words “keywords, keyword phrases, or key phrases” they may assume you are talking about optimizing your rankings, however it’s not merely about keywords.
Google’s algorithms are continually updating and improving. A few years ago all you had to do was cram in a lot of Meta tags and flood your site with key words and overdose on links.
However, the technicians working for the likes of Google and yahoo etc have improved their search engines and now you have to be a lot more genuine in trying to improve your rankings, and oddly enough its mainly by genuinely improving your website, earning genuine links and being informative and useful to surfers/users.
Several helpful hints
The Algorithms are so advanced now that they can pick up whether or not a text is genuinely informative and helpful or merely flooded with relevant keywords. The irony is you may use shortcuts to get traffic to your site, but the methods you use result in traffic leaving your site just as quickly.
Content, your site needs to have useful relevant quality content. This will serve your site in several ways, the most obvious being that the users will appreciate your site, maybe link to it, or rate in on social community searches and secondly it will help your rankings.
Use you headings and subheading, meta tag correctly, effectively but don’t overkill them. Make your site user and search-engine friendly, this may mean having text links on your site or it can be done by embedded text. Finally do all the necessary site work, submit Site Maps to all the relevant search engines Yahoo, LookSmart, Open Directory, Business.com, FAST Search, and most obviously Google!
Now there are a lot or “Move up Quick” methods that do work but in the end wont. Just don’t use the old, out dated tricks to fool the searches, don’t use hidden text; your site should be for users therefore all the text should be visible.
Things to avoid
Avoid making a flash page introduction, this generally does not improve your rankings, Google and company are working to improve their bots to read or analyze this form of website displays but they are a long way off, so generally using this may look cool or pretty but in the end in fact hurt your rankings.
Avoid, Doorways Domains or Pages, redirects, gateways and automated software that generate software for you. These look like quick methods but they won’t help your users or your rankings in the long run.
The essence of the search engine business is to give their clients (searches) what they are looking for, therefore they are going to be setting standards for sites that are useful and easy to navigate. The bottom line is that the quick fixes do the job, temporarily, but at the same time annoy users. So do it properly and get the same results and happier users.
