There are many search engine optimisation (SEO) techniques used to drive online traffic to a particular website. But driving high volumes of online traffic to a particular website does necessarily result in quality sales leads. Being able to generate organic* online traffic to your website requires ethical SEO techniques and an SEO campaign plan.

5 steps to generate organic traffic:

Plan an SEO campaign

Before looking at SEO techniques you should plan a campaign. Within your plan you should note your specific business objectives; sales targets; measurements methods; budget allocation; and timelines. Once you have decided what results you want to achieve from your campaign then you can map out the SEO techniques to achieve your objectives and targets.
Use relevant keywords

When people type keywords into search engines they’re generally looking for a specific product, service or information. Creating a keyword list that’s precise and relevant to your website content will attract high-value – or organic – traffic.
Quality incoming links

Placing links to your website on other related websites will help drive online traffic to your site. Traffic from incoming links will be organic traffic as users have especially followed your link to see products, services or information they’re interested in on your website. Having incoming links on other websites also enhances Search Engine Optimisation as your website becomes more popular. You can increase incoming links by making use of online business directories and related community or industry sites. When placing incoming links on other websites always make sure the sites are trusted, as these are more likely to be acknowledged by search engines. Make sure you link text is a keyword relevant to your company, rather than your company name. Increasing incoming links across different websites is often referred to as ‘link exchange’.
Geographic SEO

This is especially important if you’re a tradesman or wanting to attract business leads locally. To refine your results to a geographic location you’ll need to have your location as a specific keyword within your keyword list. This will help attract online traffic from people looking for products or services within your area.
Pay per click

Pay per click (PPC) is a marketing tool within search engines that guarantees your website’s visibility within in search engine result lists. Businesses have the opportunity to purchase top ranking positions within search engine results. PPC marketing can generate a high volume of online traffic to your website. This differs from SEO, which can take weeks and months to deliver similar, if not less, results. It’s able to almost guarantee organic online traffic to a website and is faster to apply than common SEO techniques. PPC is able access specified landing sites and target selected areas of advertising. It can be stopped or started at any period, which the advertiser to target traffic at peak hours or preferred times.
