Search Engine Optimization Sins – Duplicate Content

July 13th, 2008 by

It’s not uncommon to see duplicate content on the web, but it is becoming
less and less common as search engines use new and improved algorithms to help
them combat those practices they wish to deter. Duplicate content is one such
practice, although exceptions do exist. It’s important to get an understanding
of what is, and what is not considered to be duplicate content and then avoid
its use.

What Is Considered Duplicate Content?

Duplicate content is said, by Google, to be all or a majority of a page of
copied content. As and example, copying an entire entry out of wikipedia or
a similar online resource would definitely be considered duplicating content.
Even the use of PLR, white label, or directory articles will trigger the search
engine’s duplicate content filter.

What Isn’t Considered Duplicate Content?

Using quotes and offering blocks of text from other websites (appropriate
referenced, of course) would not be considered duplicate content as long as
it only forms a portion of a web page. The real issue truly only arises when
more of your content is duplicated than isn’t.

The Duplicate Content “Penalty”

With that said, the term “duplicate content penalty” is misleading. Strictly
speaking, a page won’t be penalised for using duplicate content but it certainly
won’t gain the same search engine rankings as it would if the page were unique.
With Google, for example, a duplicate page is likely to find its way into the
supplemental index.

Avoiding Duplicate Content

It is possible to use articles from directories and PLR resources and still
get a good ranking but it will mean extra effort in link building. As a general
rule, a duplicate page will be very difficult indeed to rank highly in search
engine results and the practice should be avoided where possible.

  1. Abriana says:

Duplicate content generally refers to substantive blocks of content within or across domains that either completely matches with other content or are appreciably similar. Duplicate content on a site is not grounds for actions on that site unless it appears that the intent of the duplicate content is to be deceptive and manipulate search engine result.

  2. Genessa says:

Duplicate content has become a huge topic of discussion. Your content could be considered as a duplicate if you assume that creating multiple or similar copies of the same page will either increase their chances of getting listed in search engines or help them to get multiple listings, due to the presence of more keywords.

  3. Brooklyn says:

Everyone must understand that the term duplicate content penalty is actually a misnomer. When we refer to penalties in search engine rankings, actually duplicate content pages are not penalized. Rather they are simply filtered, the way in which you would have used a sieve to remove unwanted particles. Sometimes, good particles are accidentally filtered out.

  4. Brooklyn says:

Duplicate content filtering isn’t an issue. It has multiple shades that in the worst case penalize an entire site and in the best case just affect the ranking of a page slightly because all forms of duplication across pages can affect your ranking. So your content and description should be unique, attractive and relevant.

  5. Alexander says:

There are several things you can do to avoid the duplicate content filter. First, you must be able to check your pages for duplicate content. You must check and determine similarity between two pages and make them as unique as possible and relevancy score of your website should be high.

  7. Content is King! If you’ve spent ages researching and writing and original, engaging article and someone knowing steals it, then you have every right to be punished. But if you unknowing break the rules by using blog labels and blog archives that’s another matter.

Duplicate content is the hot seo topic of 2009 and will probably continue into the new year.

    Seasons Greetings
