SEO Sins – Keyword Stuffing

July 16th, 2008 by

Keyword stuffing is a general term that can actually relate to several black
hat SEO techniques, all of which should be avoided. Keyword stuffing, or keyword
spamming, can occur in meta tags and in the main content of your page. Search
engines prefer to see much lower keyword densities than the 10% or more that
many websites used to employ.

Cramming Keywords Into Meta Tags

The Meta keyword tag is one area of a web page that search engines consider
when looking for sites that attempt to artificially manipulate their results.
Keyword stuffing in this case can mean the use of the same keyword over and
over, or an extensive list of keywords, many of which aren’t included in the
main content of the page.

Other HTML Tags

Alt tags and image and link title tags are also hot spots for keyword stuffing
activity and are another area that search engine spiders crawl. While it is
vital to include keywords and ensure that you offer a relevant title and
alternative to each of the images and other elements on your page, you should
avoid the over use of keywords.

Search Engine Penalties

Search engines may penalise any page they believe is guilty of keyword cramming.
In reality, as long as you don’t intentionally set out to do this, and gain
an upper hand by using black hat methods then your pages are unlikely to be
penalised. However, you almost certainly won’t get many of the advantages when
compared to the appropriate use of keywords.

A Meta tag is one area of a web page that artificially manipulates their results. These cramming and spamming keywords are not useful for the site and visitors, because these keywords boom the visitors only for sometime after that they avoid it.

You should offer a relevant title and alternative to each of the images and other elements on your page. You should avoid the over use of keywords. The use of excessive keywords is a sin of SEO.

  3. Isaiah says:

The most of the black hat SEO techniques are keywords stuffing, invisible text, doorway pages and more… which are used to gain high ranking in short period of time but is it a better way to get ranking?

  4. Ella says:

The black hat SEO practices will actually provide short-term gains in terms of rankings, but if you have discovered utilizing these spammy techniques on your website, you run the risk of being penalized by search engines.

It’s hard to believe that people still do this, just plain old inexperienced idiots. Reminds me of the webmasters who only built sites for the purpose of placing google ads on them, google finally stopped them, now they are stopping keyword crammers. The truth is that these keyword spammers are plain old lazy people who want to make a living on the internet without the real work that is involved.
