Separating myth from reality
September 19th, 2009 by Michael
Search engine optimization is not a brand new concept to the internet. In fact, it has been around since the birth of the internet, but has only come to light in recent years. Why? Simply because the internet has never been such a rich source of business before. The more people cotton onto the concept of online marketing, the more websites pop up.
The more websites there are, the more competition there is for web presence and visibility. The more competition there is, the more underhanded some people will become in order to come out on top. Now, to level the playing field for all players involved, SEO came into play. So optimization is an important concept to you as an internet user, whether you have a website or not.
For website owners it allows you a fair chance at getting ahead of your competition. For web browsers, it offers you a way to get at the best websites for your search criteria. However, just as with many other things in the world, SEO is shrouded in myth. It is important for you as a website owner to know the difference between reality and myth.
Some popular myths abound
Myths about optimization include being able to up your efforts through millions of links, being able to successfully buck the system and many more. Unfortunately for those out there who are hoping to have a fast, whirlwind journey to the top of the rankings, it is not going to happen. The search engines have grown smarter as people find new and inventive ways to exploit SEO. The engines are continuously adapting and evolving to negate these cunning short cuts to fame and fortune on the web.
They are making sure that everyone has to follow the same process from bottom to top. As for the millions of links increasing the power of your optimization, that isn’t quite true either. It does not help you at all to have a million poor quality links. They will only drag your reputation down with them and your ranking is likely to drop. The trick is to get links from popular, top quality websites so that their popularity and quality will add to yours and not detract from it.
A reality check
Search engine optimization is by far not an easy task and it encompasses all aspects of your website from content to web design and off-site optimization efforts such as external links. In order to be successful at optimization you need to do a lot of research. Research your target market, your industry norms and everything you can about optimization. Wisely put what you have learnt into practice and monitor the results carefully.
Use your statistics to monitor effective optimization and that which is not as effective. Tweak your efforts when they are not quite on target in order to make them better and more effective than before. Don’t look for short cuts; they do not exist in SEO.
Search engine optimization is a very real aspect of having a successful website; there are many different SEO companies that can help you along your way. However, even more important than their help and advice is that you know the difference between SEO myths and reality.
