The Realities of Search Engine Optimisation
August 26th, 2009 by Nick
Every entrepreneur has the whimsical fantasy that when they embark on their search engine optimisation campaign they will have overnight success. They dream of having such immediate and overwhelming results that their websites will not be able to cope and shut down.
Who does not think about how wonderful it would be to be able to just let things flow once they have their SEO in place. Dreaming is good, but business success rests flatly on reality. That reality is that optimisation is time consuming, it is costly and it takes time and you have to keep at it or things start sliding.
Tools to be used
Search engine optimisation cannot wave a magic wand, but it is excellent at using any available tool. Instead of pegging your hopes on blogs, or the latest trend in social media, have a look at each of them and decide how best to use them to your SEO advantage. The thing with tools is that some work better for your brand while others will give mediocre results.
So you have to look at each tool from a strictly SEO perspective. You have to evaluate how effectively it will drive your targeted market to your website. Whatever tools you decide to use must fit in well with the overall marketing strategy for your business. Each tool must be able to interact if you want to gain the most out of it for the money and effort you put in.
Working together
Some people simply feel that SEO and marketing is the same thing. Marketing is about creating brand awareness. It is about making sure that your target audience gets to know who you are and what you can offer them. SEO tackles things from the opposite direction. This is about your target audience trawling the net, they come looking for you.
So what is created is the push-pull effect. Marketing push outward and SEO pulls them in. Just as marketing takes a concerted effort to push, our optimisation efforts have to have a mighty pull. You cannot think for one minute that you can stick a few appropriate keywords into you web content and that will be it.
Effort pays off
Using SEO effectively is going to take work as there are no generic ‘template’ kind of optimisation that is going to work for you, the horticulturist and the beauty products company. Your entire SEO campaign must be created to suit your specific needs for your business. This means it is not possible to cook up a SEO campaign over a few drinks and have it set to go the next morning.
A successful SEO campaign takes a large chunk of research, lots of time and effort. Once it is in place it becomes a game of analysing what is working and tweaking factors that are not performing well. SEO is not a grab here and grab there process, it is methodical and each step taken is deliberate.
Anyone who offers you first page ranking overnight at a ridiculous cost of a few pounds is daft and talking bull twaddle. It takes skill, experience and intense effort, but at the end of the day it is all worth it. Good SEO will give you lasting results.
