Great post Nick,
Completely agree that focusing on long-tail keywords (such as “adobe computer software”), rather than generic, short-tail keywords (such as “computers”) will achieve better results in the natural rankings. Niche targeting always gets my vote.
I recently did some research on CTR, conversion rate and profitability for searches containing different numbers of words (short tails vs. long tails). Although it has more of a PPC focus, the finding that long-tail keywords outperform short-tails in almost every measure, can easily be applied to SEO.

Also agree that the free keyword tools can be extremely useful for researching long-tail keywords. I use Google’s Keyword Tool all the time and it’s a great help for uncovering those infrequently searched-for terms.
