Targeted Traffic For A Business Website

August 25th, 2008 by

Effective Search Engine Optimization will not only generate traffic for a website, but it can be used to drive targeted and reactive visitors to a business site. Business websites are quite different to those that are set up to make money selling advertising space or to direct customers to other sites through affiliate links. While these profit sites can change the “products” they offer, a business website has to ensure that they drive traffic specifically targeted towards the product they sell. This level of targeted traffic is what will make a profit and ensure that your Search Engine Optimization is successful.

Profit Sites

Profit sites have the advantage that if their traffic is being unresponsive because it isn’t targeted quite properly, they can offer a different link or provide alternative affiliate products. By tracking results and altering content as well it’s possible to a large degree to alter a website so that it is targeted to the traffic that it is receiving. While this is partially feasible for the business website, it is much less of an option because of a rigid product line or range of services.

Business Sites

Business websites are established to promote a company or, more accurately, the services and products that company offers. A business can’t simply change the product they offer because they find that the search engine traffic they’re receiving is looking for something slightly different. It is still possible to change web page content and attempt to drive visitors towards a particular service but this isn’t the most effective route to take.

Market And Keyword Research

Careful market research and consideration of the most likely target market should lead to a good indication of the search terms that are most commonly used. As such, keyword research is even more important to the business website than it is to the profit site.

Specific Search Terms

Generally speaking, when we use more specific search terms we are more inclined to make a purchase at the end of our trail. The shorter and more generic keywords are those most often used by people looking for general information. Conversion rates for generic keywords are usually much lower.

Key Phrases

Keywords or key phrases that have three or four words or more are usually being made by people looking for a very specific item or service. In turn this means that the visitors these key phrases produce are more inclined to make a purchase. As long as the product at the end of the search is what these people are looking for and as long as the content on the page really helps to sell it, they will be inclined to purchase and the page will generate good conversion rates.

Search Engine Optimization For Business

Search Engine Optimization for businesses is different for Search Engine Optimization for profit sites. The SEO has to take the brunt of the effort because it would be highly unlikely that a business could change to match the resulting traffic. It is possible to make alterations to content and attempt to drive visitors in a slightly different direction but conversion rates will suffer as a result.
