Having a top ranking in one of the major search engines, an entry in the most popular directories and a strong and positive presence within some of the biggest social networking communities can all be advantageous. Many businesses using SEO become focused on these kinds of websites and achievements.

However, it is important companies running an SEO campaign do not forget about the smaller and more specialised websites which exist. These sites can also be of great assistance in an SEO campaign.

Small and specialised search engines may not have huge audiences compared to sites like Google and Bing but many of these search engines do have a loyal fan base which uses their services regularly. If a search engine is relatively unknown within the online community, a large number of companies will not be competing for their attention and the top rankings they can offer. The result is it can be easier for you to get your business noticed. If you get a top ranking in search results generated by a search engine specialised in a certain business industry related to your company, you are guaranteed relevant and suitable traffic.

Smaller directories can also be beneficial for businesses running an SEO campaign. There are likely a number of online directories specifically listing businesses in your industry and once again, if you can get your site listed in a directory like this you can be sure of relevant and targeted traffic. If searchers go to a search engine like this, they are already looking for a business related to your industry and therefore will be more likely to be interested in what you have to offer.

Even if a social networking website is not yet hugely popular with millions of users, this does not mean it can’t be a useful tool in your search engine optimisation campaign.

In smaller and closer social networking communities, it can be easier to make your company stand out and to get it noticed. Your brand will be able to develop effectively because of the close bonds and relationships which can be formed in a community like this. It will also be easier for your company to dominate its market because it will be unlikely a large number of your competitors have profiles in sites like this too.

In SEO, the big and popular websites are of huge importance but the smaller sites can make a difference to your business too and so should not be ignored.
