Give a small business SEO clout

December 25th, 2009 by

Small businesses have fewer resources than their bigger competitors. It can seem like a huge, uphill struggle to get your small business to a decent rank in your industry’s keywords. There are angles you can take that will not only help you along, but give your business a definite and solid boost over all.

Getting a website online is the first huge obstacle to overcome, and there are things you can build into your design that make it easier in the future. Consulting an SEO professional at this stage will ensure that your site is built with the best structure for search engine spiders to crawl. You can also find out what’s going on in your industry through your keyword research. Talking to your SEO professional will help you to lay the groundwork for the future, so that even if you can’t afford regular SEO maintenance, the irregular touches you make on your site have you headed in the right direction.

Many small businesses establish their site before thinking about SEO. This makes things a little more difficult, but not impossible. Your main obstruction when it comes to search engine optimisation will be the time your business can afford. Luckily, SEO techniques can be applied over time. If you do a bit of research into SEO, it will help you make a decision on what can be done and when.

When it comes to implementing your SEO plan, there are techniques that require money and there are completely free ones. It is the latter that most small businesses will want to take advantage of. Some businesses create backlinks using paid services, but natural links are better. One way to mine your natural resources in this area is to monitor the backlinks of your competitors. You will often find there are links that you can take advantage of as well. Keep a lookout for links that more than one competitor has gained access to.

Social media is another area that every business has access to, and if you engage in a social media campaign yourself that access is free. Micro-blogging your site on Twitter, getting a Facebook account and joining industry forums are all basic things you can do to build your site’s off-page SEO. Even if you don’t approach social media through an SEO company, it’s a good idea to get advice on your approach, and you can talk to our experts at SEO Consult in this area.

Not many businesses have taken advantage of Google Maps and local search, but these are great areas to look at if you’re a small business. Consider seeding a few reviews in these areas for your site’s ranking to grow.

There are aspects of SEO that it’s important not to skimp on. Your site’s keywords are an asset that needs upkeep. It can be helpful to study the keyword trends in your industry from the past to get an idea of how frequently you will need to perform keyword research. Getting general SEO advice from a professional can also help you to avoid major mistakes.

You’re totally right that it can be a big mistake to create your website first, with no thought of SEO. I have two clients who, though small businesses, spent a lot of money to have all-flash web sites designed for them. They’re like billboards in the woods – beautiful web sites once you’re there, but no one can find them. They actually had to redesign their sites to be non-flash sites before they had any hope of getting good visibility in any of the search engines.

Many small businesses are looking for SEO results first without having a plan. It’s impossible to have effective SEO without first doing your homework.

It’s critical to do keyword and competitive analysis research and have a plan of attack.

Plus, you’re right… lots of opportunity in Google Local Maps.
