Is There A Limit To SEO Success?
January 17th, 2009 by Dan
There is never a limit to success in any field. You may have achieve the greatest by winning a gold medal in the Olympics yet there are some who hold world records and an Olympic gold, or some that hold several of each. The bottom line is that there is always room for improvement. Especially in an ever evolving environment such as the internet.
The Internet is changing at an insane rate; users are getting smarter, and are always looking and searching for the next best thing. People want more efficiency, more information, more useful links and better website overall. To compound the situation there are millions of website out there that are competing to get those users. So it may seem a little unreasonable to say, but few could really argue, ultimate success is impossible.
Just because it is impossible does not mean that one shouldn’t try. People use to think that the four minute mile was an impossible task for the human body to overcome, now days it is achieved by hundreds of people, continuously. So one may say it’s impossible, while another might see that as a challenge that needs to be overcome.
Legitimate SEO is an ongoing task, a business for example can design a website to meet all the requirements, and then leave it and hope that it will continue to bring in the same amount of business. The fact is new software is being developed everyday to improve the usefulness of the Internet, you close your eyes for a second and you and your website will be left in the proverbial Dark Ages.
SEO is largely about making your site useful to users while maximizing rankings on search engines. The two go hand in hand. So in order to have a useful website it needs to be relevant, which in turn means that the site needs to be continually maintained. Google for example is continually altering or adjusting their variables, and therefore a site that may rank number one today may not be in the top ten tomorrow.
Just like Google, all websites need to be tweaked, monitored and improved. Because of the competitive nature of the Internet there isn’t just a need to keep up, but to also beat others to the prize. There is no place for second when it come to the internet, if there is a competitor and that site gets the latest news, software, gadgets etc before you, and is ranked head of you then a user won’t leave that site to visit yours.
There is also a repetitive cycle, the minute you are ahead, someone else wants to beat you and vice versa. That is what will continue to improve the Internet, competitive nature between sites.
So there may be ultimate success today with regards to SEO, but tomorrow the goal post would have been moved and you have to again try and be the best. There are only temporary winners.
