How flexible is your SEO campaign?
January 10th, 2009 by Nick
Internet marketing methods like Pay Per Click (PPC), are known for their flexibility and adjustability because they are short term strategies. PPC is particularly easy to adjust because the keywords can easily be altered if they are not producing much traffic or return on investment. Yet PPC’s benefit to your online presence ends as soon as the paid campaign does.
Search Engine Optimisation is a very different way of approaching the task of raising your profile on the internet. SEO is a longer term strategy, using techniques which don’t always have a noticeable benefit to your search engine results listings straight away, but can have a huge impact over a longer period of time which is ongoing. There are elements of an SEO campaign which can be adjusted if some aspects are not improving your search results as they should, which I go into more detail of below. However, by far the best way to run an SEO campaign is to be properly prepared before you start. A good Search Engine Optimisation company has the expertise to develop a comprehensive and well researched campaign using ethical SEO techniques which should minimise the need for any major adjustments.
The best way to keep track of how your Search Engine Optimisation campaign is progressing is to use an analytics package. If you don’t have a large amount of technical knowledge or haven’t had specific web analytics training, then the amount of raw data your analytics report back to you can be overwhelming and very confusing. The key to using your analytics is in deciphering and knowing how to apply the information give to you. A good SEO company can look after the analytics side of your Search Engine Optimisation campaign for you, providing regular reports on how your website optimisation strategy is working and any areas which can be adjusted and improved. Analytics can tell you how many visitors to your site convert into customers. It can tell you how they arrived at your website (search engine, referral from another industry relevant site, directly from typing in your company name etc) and which of your pages are most popular, even the times of day that they get the most hits and the geographical area that your visitors originate from.
There are some elements to your SEO campaign that you won’t want to adjust whenever possible, such as your starting keywords. Of course it is always possible to introduce new content to your website which can target more new keywords, but if the keyword research is done properly in the first place, then making major changes to your main pages (such as your homepage) is unlikely to be necessary.
