The 5 Major Don’ts Of Business Blogging for SEO

December 19th, 2009 by

It is a very common element of most business sites these days to have a business blog. Companies have been shocked by the success of some of these blogs and further shocked when their own apparently perfect blog utterly fails. The difference, as always, is in the detail.

Business blogs are quite a difficult area because they are openly connected to a business. They have, therefore, a fairly transparent aim: to promote the business. This will set off the cynicism alarms of a lot of blog readers. When approaching your business blog, it’s important to maintain a balance between achieving your business aims and providing valuable content to your site’s users. There are five major mistakes that cause many business blogs to perform poorly.

1. Infrequent updates. The first rule of any type of blog is updating regularly. Most blogs update at least once a week, some update on specific days of the week, and a lot of blogs update daily. How frequently you update is up to you, but keep it consistent and constant. Not only do frequent updates help to engage your readers, it adds to the SEO potential of your blog.

2. No conversation. Part of the reason a lot of experts recommend adding blogs to a site is the search engine optimisation benefits. Another part is the sense of community a blog can add to your site, making it more attractive. Encourage your users to talk with you by allowing comments or posting emails. Replying to user comments sends the message that you are open to communication.

3. Hiding lights under bushels. Interacting with other blogs not only shows that your business is genuine in its desire to add value to the blogosphere, it brings people back to your blog. This kind of informal advertisement is vital to your blog’s success. It is also great for your site’s SEO, which is an added bonus.

4. Advertising through the blog. Everyone uses their blogs to promote their aims. A blog that sounds too promotional, however, comes off as merely an advertisement, and nobody wants to read those much. Blog content should be friendly and conversational, usually with an informational angle. If you have a press release you want to feature on the blog, feature it with an introduction that acknowledges it is a press release. Don’t do this too often, though.

5. Impatience. Some businesses quit their blogs after a couple of months because they have few followers. Persistence can pay off. It can also help to remember that a friendly blog gives the appearance of popularity even if it’s still building followers.

Even if you have accessed professional resources to provide the actual content of your blogs, you will maintain some control over content. Experts will be able to provide valuable insight into what is and is not appropriate for your blog, and you can seek advice at SEO Consult. You need to be able to set realistic aims for your blog, and engage in it with real enthusiasm, for it to succeed.
