Copywriting Aimed at SEO for Your Website

August 25th, 2009 by

A huge part of your websites search engine optimization is the writing of the content or copy of your website. Search engines and web crawlers and spiders cannot see pictures, hear music or watch video content. They can only read your tags, labels, content and codes. While your tags, your domain name, anchor text and such are important, your copy is even more so.

The reason for this is that your copy is aimed at both the bots and your human visitors. Your customer satisfaction is important for your optimization. The more popular your website is with your visitors, the more popular it becomes with the search engines as well. This is because your web traffic volumes and popularity with internet users is factored into your overall Search Engine ranking.

The power of the right keywords

Keywords are an important part of your content and your search engine optimization. The reason your keywords are so important is that they are the only way for your visitors to find your website. If you pick the wrong keywords to put into the copy written for your website, you will attract the wrong audience. You will be marketing your website to the wrong people and this has another negative impact on your optimization.

Your website will become increasingly unpopular due to visitor dissatisfaction and your page rank will steadily slip lower and lower. So choosing the right keywords when writing for your website is very important for your search engine optimization. The good news is that you don’t have to go it alone when looking for and choosing the correct target keywords. There are online tools to help you pick out the perfect keywords.

Strategic positioning of your keywords

Where you place your keywords is just about as important as what keywords you choose. Stuffing your keywords into the body of your website copy won’t get you very far with your visitors or with the search engines or web crawlers. There are a few strategic places to pop your keywords into on your website and strategic uses for them that up your SEO methods.

Your headings are very good places to use keywords and it is also important to use them towards the beginning of the headings too. You can put your keywords in bold or italics. The best idea is to create links out of your keywords instead of the simple “click here for more”.

Writing for your visitors, the human ones

When you are writing for search engine optimization it is easy to lose sight of the fact that you are also writing for human visitors. It is important to write for both your audience and the bots equally. Writing for your human audience is just as important to your SEO as your writing for the bots.

Making your copy easy to read, naturally flowing and informative is the ideal when writing for your company website. Always remember to strike a good balance so that you get the best of both worlds when approaching the SEO copywriting for your company website.

Interesting post, though I think it’s only a matter of time before the engines start searching music, video and picture content.

The big two (now Google and Microsoft via Yahoo) are struggling to keep up with the explosion of new content and recent search quality has been affected. As you mention at the start of your post, search is far from perfect – for the moment.
How they react and evolve will shape the future for online content writers/copywriters.

    Only time will tell…
