Don’t Let SEO Overpower Your Articles

July 3rd, 2010 by

As website owners, everyone knows how important search engine optimisation is for their online success. The more competitive the market you are competing in is, the harder it is to make an impression. So it is understandable that people focus so intently on their optimisation efforts that they lose focus of what there website content should be all about.

Ultimately, the search engines are not the ones that will buy your products or make use of your services. Yes, the SEs and the spiders are important, and you have to provide for them so that they can crawl your website, index your web pages and make you highly visible. However, it becomes incredibly easy to fall into the trap of pleasing the search engines by hook or by crook and let the rest see to themselves.

Goals of article writing

Being able to speak and write reasonable English does not make you a successful SEO writer. Writing effective articles for optimisation purposes takes far more than normal English and a row of keywords that must be stuck into the text. All SEO articles have a two-fold purpose; optimisation and readable information. The written copy must be search engine friendly to make the spiders interested enough to come crawling. The bigger picture is that you want people to actually read, understand and find your articles interesting.

Stop forcing it

Never demand that keywords and keyword phrases must be used X-number times in a paragraph and article. What happens is that to try and force the number of keywords into each paragraph results in unreadable garbage many of the times. Reading a keyword phrase ten times in one paragraph will irritate the reader into leaving your website.

The message of the entire article is lost when forcing keyword and keyword phrases into the text. Writing articles are called creative writing for good reason. When writing good content the actual content will support your keyword phrases and throw up natural variants of that keyword. Benefits of good SEO article writing; you not only get in your specific keyword and attract traffic. A secondary benefit is that the variants of the keyword will attract additional traffic.

Edit and proofread

Whether you are writing your SEO articles yourself or outsourcing to a content writer, proofreading and editing is essential before you take the articles online. Spelling and grammar must be gone over, but that is not where it stops. Really read the article critically as if you are a site visitor reading it. Look at the flow of the words and see if the article makes good sense.

If the sentence structure is clunky and the keywords and keyword phrases leap out at you making reading difficult, then it is time to rethink and then rewrite. SEO articles are all about balance. You need enough keywords to appease the search engines within excellent written content that hold the attention of readers. Never sacrifice quality in order to impress the search engines.
