Let your content run free for SEO

Every good web site will have a variety of content. Some content will be business-focussed, some will describe products and services, and some will provide other information to the site’s users. If the content development plan is a good one, some of the content will be interesting in and of itself.

Many businesses are familiar with the use of online press releases as a marketing technique. What most businesses fail to realise is that, potentially, any piece of content featured on a site can go out and work for you across the net. Well-written content not only can, but should, travel further than your own site. This will generate not only interest from outside your site, but can be a great source of inbound links.

Although not many businesses promote their content outside of their own site, every piece of content on your site should be able to work for you. Obviously, some pieces of content must restrict their work to the site, such as company information pages. Some of your site’s content should be able to travel from the site and work independently. This is truly valuable content.

There are a lot of mistakes made with site content. Your SEO consultant should put you on the right track to providing keyword-rich, quality content throughout your site. Unfortunately, when a company doesn’t consult SEO professionals, or fails to follow a good content maintenance plan, the content side of things can be allowed to slide.

There are three things every site should look for in good content:

• It is well-written, with no errors
• It is interesting to as much of the target audience as possible
• It addresses the perceived needs of the user

In comparison to these essentials, inserting SEO techniques into your content may be relatively easy. Sometimes, obtaining good SEO content for your site can be hard and it can help to consult your SEO professional. However, obtaining decent content for your site is one thing- using it to its maximum potential is another.

It can be hard to think beyond your own site, particularly during the initial implementation of search engine optimisation. All it takes to make a difference is the realisation of what your site’s content could achieve outside the site. Really well-written content, particularly articles, can be posted around the net. Image and video content can be used even more easily, as duplicate content is not such an issue with these formats.

When you determine what content from your site is appropriate to post around the net, look at article hosting sites and industry blogs. Image content can be posted not only to YouTube, but several other internet video platforms. If the content is instructional, don’t forget to post it to sites like E-How to maximise its exposure.

In using content to promote the site elsewhere on the net, you need to be aware of duplicate content issues and ready to combat them.
