SEO Copywriting, it’s a skill
May 23rd, 2009 by Nick
Copywriting is the term normally used to describe the use of words to promote a business, company or person. It is different to journalistic writing and other writing styles as its sole purpose is to promote the subject in question. The material written is sometimes online, e.g. in a promotional email, website content or can be press releases or brochures etc. When referring to copywriting on websites, this usually means the method of Search Engine Optimisation, e.g. writing new content for a website with the purpose of improving the rankings in the search engine results. In terms of online marketing, copywriting is one of the key elements to achieving success. It is estimated that over 80% of traffic to websites comes from people directed from search engines. This is a massive number of people and reinforces the idea that it is so important to have you use the search engines to your advantage and one way of doing this is using Search Engine Optimisation copywriting.
Search Engine Optimisation copywriting is the technique of writing text for a web page in order that it reads well for the person visiting the website and also includes many keywords for the search engine spiders to filter through. The main idea behind Search Engine Optimisation copywriting is that it achieves a higher ranking within the search engine results by methods approved by the search engine itself. The main and most important requirement for any search engine is that the newly uploaded content is genuine and makes sense for any potential visitor to the website reading it. It can also be known as a white hat method of SEO.
There are many different people who do copywriting for different companies. Most normally have a background in advertising, public relations or web development while many are freelancers who work for a variety of clients. It is desirable to have knowledge about the subject area you are writing about, but research can be carried out if there are any gaps in the provided information. The whole point of SEO copywriting is to give some details about the subject but also to create a piece of text suitable for the particular website which makes sense and includes as many keywords as possible.
It is therefore very important that the copywriter has a good writing style and is able to conduct research about each subject adequately. The text written by the copywriter must make sense and be grammatically correct so good English language skills are also a bonus. It is also important that they have a general knowledge of what Search Engine Optimisation is and understand what it tries to achieve for the client. It is also important to have a good understanding of Search Engine Optimisation so that they know not to use the black hat techniques. This is important because the use of these can lead to a drop in the website’s ranking and a possible temporary or permanent ban from the search engine.
