Writing Content aimed at SEO

October 10th, 2009 by

Writing with SEO in mind is distinct. It is aimed at attracting the attention of both human readers and search engine spiders. However many webmasters make the mistake of downplaying the human side and concentrate instead on what they think spiders want. The goal should be to provide content that is able to satisfy both human and spider.

Content is more than putting down words on a page. While this is fine for human consumption, SEO content needs the addition of a few other things such as titles, headings, tags and links. And they all need to work together in a way that human and spiders can find what they are looking for in order to make the right decisions.

Titles

Titles are crucial they are they item read by both elements. Its function has a dual purpose. It must first contain keywords or keyword phrases at word level and must also interest readers at a phrase level.

Once a search has been preformed a title indicates how relevant your site is to their needs. It is what can compel someone to click through to your site. Title gives relevance to a spider because they indicate what the content on the page is about.

Heading Tags

Heading tags define both headings and subheadings and are relevant to both human and spider. They are usually constructed out of special text in that they are bold or larger than the body of text. This alone is aimed at attracting attention. For this reason they are accorded more importance than normal text. They are also an opportunity of showing spiders the theme of your content and the keywords you want to rank for.

The most important tag is the H1 Tag which is placed in the main heading. It must convey the topic of the article for human readers and the main keywords for spiders. H2 tags on the other hand are on level down. They are used to define subtopics and also make use of keywords for spiders. These tags can be broken down to sub-sub headings such as H3 and so on.

Page Content

Content needs to be focused and organized. While the rule of one topic per page is not written in stone, it is good advice. This is aimed at spiders in particular. Algorithms tend to work best when they are dealing with one notion at a time. Many human work best in this mode too.

The added benefit is that it allows easy placing of keywords in Meta descriptions, titles, tags and links. Allows topics their own webpage content will also strengthen the overall information power of a website.

Writing content for SEO is a balance that has to engage the reader while providing detached analysis of keywords. It has to target the subject, the human reader, the spiders and algorithms. Yet is must also be written in a way that encourages those with short attention spans.

It has to compel people to stop and read or stop and click through to where you want them to go.
