Catchy Title Tags
September 3rd, 2009 by Michael
Even if your website is well positioned on search engines pages if you aren’t getting clicked on you aren’t successful. People tend to skim through search results and it is here that your title tag can grab their attention, make them stop and click through to your site. No matter where you are positioned. Title tags have the ability to clearly identify your website offerings. Within a space of three seconds a reader makes the decision where or not your site can offer them value, heighten their curiosity and encourage a response.
Your headline
Title tags are in effect your headline. With some careful thought you can use them to establish a relationship. The more engaging your title tags are the higher the response they will elicit. It is all about getting click through.   You have just one shot at attracting visitors. Write a catchy headline and the intuitive assumption is that your website is worth taking a look at. This applies to links too as well as search engine spiders. If you can draw attention to your site and once there offer them stunning content you can anticipate higher rankings and conversions.
Yet many still follow the precept that they need to stuff all possible variations of keywords into title tags. Yet what you really should be doing is providing a snapshot of what the reader can expect to find on your WebPages. What this does is provide transparency and eliminate any possibility of being duped or baited.
Strange searches
People do use strange queries in their searches and will often drill down further to find meaningful content. People often use long queries in their searches when they are looking for something specific. For example the difference between searching of ‘shoes’ and searching for ‘high heeled blue shoes with silver buckles’ will yield exact results. If you incorporate this thinking into your SEO campaign you can cover the top 30 results by using variations of your theme. This means that you may need to look at long tail keywords. In order to ascertain this you need to analyse our stats. If you are receiving a high percentage of traffic from long tail keywords then this tactic works. If you can target the top 30 instead of only the top 10 results then you are increasing your traffic threefold.
What should Title Tags Include?
The service or product you are offering should be included in your Title Tag. Usually around 80 characters in length they are easy to optimise and should be included on each page. Title tags are in reality a mini advertisement that has the ability to drive huge volumes of traffic to your site.
They should always include at least either two keywords or keyword phrases. Stuffing them with keywords is going overboard and can actually have negative results on your rankings. Keyword stuffing is considered spamming by many search engines and can get your website in trouble.
Overlooking title tags is equivalent to putting up an advertisement but offering no means for anyone to contact you.
