Have a Plan for SEO

January 27th, 2010 by

A good business knows the value of a plan. Most businesses don’t get off the ground these days without a thorough, documented plan in place which plots out the first few years. Planning can save you from foolish mistakes and gears you up for successes.

It won’t come as a surprise, then, to know that planning is vital to your site’s SEO. Your SEO consultant will get you thinking thoroughly about an SEO plan right from your first consultation.

You can start by thinking about your industry. Keyword research and competitor analysis will be two of the many things a business approaches an SEO company for. While this will produce excellent information on how your industry works on a daily basis, only you can really know its quirks. Who knows that your major competitor has a sale every Halloween but avoids Halloween keywords? You do. Who is aware that the two-year lease on a popular domain name is about to come up because the owners went out of business? You are. Sit down and think about the information you have on your industry and how it can be useful to you. You may know more than you’re aware of.

Having a plan can also make you aware of the things you don’t need to do. If you are new to SEO, just understanding the technicalities can take up most of your time, and it’s easy to panic. Calm reflection can give you an insight into the areas you don’t need help with. You don’t need to rush out and build a blog if no-one else in your industry has ever heard of one. Filling your site with text content might not work if your users all react really well to the image-based content you already have. These things should be open for debate with your SEO consultant, after all advice is what you’ve hired them for, but having thought about it beforehand will put you in a better position to make a decision.

It is vital to have a plan for your content. This is vital for your personal sanity if for nothing else. For a lot of people, sticking together 250 well-chosen words is a big task. Gluing those words around optimal keywords and phrases and making those 250 words count for your site’s users can make content creation seem a mammoth task. This is one of the many reasons businesses consult professionals for content. You can retain better control over your content if it is planned well.

After your site has been optimised, you need to have a plan for its maintenance. If you are in a slow-moving industry, perhaps bringing a consultant in for a clinic session every six months will be the way to go. If you deal in a more fast-paced field, you will probably need to look at search engine optimisation continuously. You should have a plan for your site’s future before the end of its optimisation. Talk to us at SEO Consult for advice on continued optimisation.
