Whether you have heard about search engine optimisation or think you know what it is, SEO is a very powerful marketing aid. When dealing with the internet, you need an edge, something that puts you ahead of your competitors. You may find yourself lost trying to compete with your opponents, but no fear when there is search engine optimisation.

SEO is a form of internet advertising that helps improve the amount of traffic to a site as well as the quality thereof. This traffic is gathered by search engines. Ranking plays a huge role in search engine optimization. When a site is optimised, its chance of being ranked highest on search engines results pages is increased and this is how it attracts all its traffic.

Ranking is a huge benefit of search engine optimisation

Ranking can be seen as a very important advantage of an SEO campaign. Ranking basically means the position of a sites link on a search engines results page.

When a user types in certain keywords of what they are searching for on a search engine such as MSN, Yahoo or Google, a list of results will display that are relevant to the search. When a site appears first, or close to that, people have a tendency to click such a sites link before any other. Usually it the site they enter will be what they are looking for, if not, they will approach the next link on the list.

Therefore, a website whose link is first draws in a lot of traffic. This is where the increase in traffic fits in. The quality of the traffic is also better. This basically means that a user will land on a page he or she has intended to visit and the searched keywords closely match those appearing on a website.

High ranking does not always guarantee a high number of traffic, in most cases, however it will. Having high ranking puts you ahead in a number of ways. It increases your reputation and improves your online image.

What does it take to be ranked high on Google

Google is one of the top search engines in the UK and in the world. Many internet users rely on it daily to link them to various websites. Because of the success of Google, a lot of companies wish to be ranked highest on this search engine’s results page but what they don’t realise is that Google cannot guarantee any website top feature, regardless of whether they have been optimised or not.

The process of ranking on Google is purely natural and no company or website owner can persuade Google to have their site appear on top. Achieving high ranking naturally does take some work. You don’t just apply a campaign such as SEO and expect miracles. For search engine optimization to work effectively, you will have to change your website to a certain extent. The content has to be original and fresh and keywords relevant. No black hat tricks.

    Great, unique, well organized content is definitely the first step but without some incoming links nobody will read it and link to it, so some sort of manual link building is needed to kick start you SEO campaign.
