Over-Optimisation
January 24th, 2008 by Dan
We all want our websites to be as best optimised for the search engines as is humanly possible. However, many SEOs are prone to overdoing things. Over-optimisation, or detrimental SEO practices is something that should be guarded against. Over-optimisation can have the opposite effect to good SEO, and can cause a significant drop in website traffic.
On Page issues
Some people may over optimise keywords in the body, keeping keywords exact and disregarding the increasingly intelligent reasoning capabilities of search engines. This may include highlighted keywords and anchor text of links to pages within the website. Keyword stuffing is another problem with on page over-optimisation. This can involve inserting keywords too frequently into the page’s text.
Aggressive Title tags and meta descriptions with repetitive keywords could also be part of the problem.
Off page issues
Ignoring Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI), many newbie SEOs may go to great lengths to ensure prim and proper anchor texts. Such texts are also known as “artificial anchor texts”. They appear canned and manipulative.
Not building links regularly can also cause Google to surmise that the initial link building was manipulative or unnatural. Hence this could cause a drop in rankings.
