Realistic Timescales of When You Will Be Top

At SEO Consult we are extremely specific as to how long it will be before your site receives first page listing, our predictions are based on genuine experience and knowledge, but what should you look for in terms of expectations of an SEO campaign.
Firstly you need to generate a clear picture of the strengths of your site, you can do this through PageRank data, inbound links and meta information. I would strongly recommend downloading the Mozilla Firefox Add On that is known as SEO Quake. This tool will provide all the analysis tools needed to grasp a sites competitiveness.
Once you have discovered what your sites standing is, you then need to do the same for each of your competitors. If you take your top 4 or 5 keywords and submit a Google search query, you need to look at the sites that are ranking in the top 10 to achieve an overall picture.
Be wary of single word terms and overly competitive industries. Loans, adult, hosting and travel are notoriously difficult arenas to succeed in, so therefore you will need to focus on niche or long-tail terms.
The way to put realistic timescales on achieving first page listings it to judge how long it will take to gain a similar PageRank, a similar number of backlinks, and a similar level of content as the top sites. If this is going to take 6 months then realistically you are looking at 9 months till you will be challenging. Obviously other things have to be taken into account, domain age and site structure have a substantial bearing on ranking, but this will always be a good guide to your potential site traffic and conversions.
