SEO and the SWOT Analysis
January 25th, 2008 by Dan
It is important to build a reliable Search Engine Optimisation strategy prior to commencing SEO work. An SEO Strategy lays down the goals and objectives of your website, and presents a framework within which to achieve those objectives.
An SEO Strategy is built after a careful analysis of your website, its stakeholders and its competition. It is important to ask what we realistically want to achieve.
A SWOT Analysis
SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. A website’s strengths must be noted from a programmatic and history perspective. For example, a website may have excellent code that is perfectly search engine friendly, which can be a source of strength. However, at the same time, it could only be a month old, which represents a search engine reputation deficit. This can be a weakness.
Opportunities may be niches which can be exploited. A certain keyword, for example, may have few competition. Such competition may be observed by the strength and reputation of the websitse on the first Search Engine Results Page (SERP).
Threats may be things that can prove to be detrimental to the success of the website. For example, competitors who have old, well trusted websites may be regarded as a threat.
A SWOT Analysis can provide a very good overview of the future prospecst of the website, and can be a foundation for a successful and realistic SEO strategy.
