The Hierarchical Method Of SEO Strategy

March 24th, 2010 by

There are plenty of ways your SEO firm can help you when you’re approaching search engine optimisation. There are also ways in which you can help them. A little prior planning can make your site’s search engine optimisation process run more smoothly and be finished in better time. You can begin your SEO before a professional is even contacted, simply by defining your strategy.

SEO is like any other business process. It seeks to achieve business goals. Many businesses don’t define these goals until they approach an SEO company. This is usually because SEO is seen as a technical, murky process that is hard for an outsider to understand. You can discuss any questions with us at SEO Consult. While there are certainly some aspects of SEO that take a little more knowledge than others, the goals you set for your business can be outlined without technical consultation.

The best method of SEO strategy is the hierarchical one, starting with at the top and working down. Starting with your major ambitions, work out how to get what you want by plotting each stage.

Define your vision

Your vision, in marketing speak, is the completion of the sentence ‘We want to be…’ This was much-used in the 1990s by businesses who felt they had lost their way. It got a little clichéd as a result, but it’s still a good way to define exactly what you want to be. Don’t limit your vision, but do place a time stamp on it. For instance, your SEO vision needs to be realistically achievable within two years to have any real meaning. A good example would be, ‘To become one of the five most influential computer advice blogs within two years’

Timeline your goals

Your vision should be worked out into specific goals, which you can then plot out on a rough time line. Search engine optimisation isn’t a swift process, so it’s important to remember that you can’t plan ’search engine result domination’ two weeks after you begin. Jotting down goals you’d like to achieve within three, six and twelve months is a reasonable thing to do. For example, smaller goals for the above vision could include ‘develop solid relationship with other bloggers’ in twelve months, and ‘reach the top ten in my main keyword’ in six months

Branch out

From your major goals, you can branch out some ideas for directions you’d like your SEO plan to take. These can come in handy when you’re considering SEO methods. Branching out from the above goals could include ’start affiliated blog’ or ‘post industry articles’

It’s important to note that SEO requires flexibility. Approaching an SEO agency with a well-defined set of goals is an excellent start. Refusing to alter your approach to those goals is a very bad way to continue. A good SEO company will be able to show you a number of ways to achieve your goals and it’s very important to be open to such suggestions.
