Why Strategy Is Essential For An Effective SEO Campaign

June 11th, 2010 by

Having a detailed strategy in place for your search engine optimization campaign is key. Without this, your campaign could fall at the first hurdle. Simply diving straight into the complex practice of SEO will not provide you with the results you desire, so, preparing beforehand is crucial.

Defining specifically what you want your search engine optimization campaign to achieve should be your first step. It is essential that you determine this before you begin conducting the keyword research for your campaign to ensure that your research is based on what the audience wants. Defining your target audience involves researching their physical properties (age, sex, location), needs and wants. Once you have done this, you can then put some clear goals in place for effectively communicating with your audience.

It is also important at this point to look at the industry that you are operating in, or, more specifically, your competitors. Competitor analysis will help you to gain a better understanding of what you should be doing with your SEO campaign, by allowing you to determine current trends, the things that you think your competitors are doing well (that you may not have thought about doing) and the things that you think they are not doing so well with (which you can capitalize on). You can look at, among others, how well your competitors have optimized their pages, how many links they have coming into their site and what keywords they have targeted. This in turn will give you some idea of the keywords that you should be targeting, which leads me on to my next point – keyword research.

Keyword research is a crucial part of your SEO campaign, as identifying the wrong keywords at the beginning could mean that all future steps in your strategy are hopeless, as the keywords were not appropriate to begin with. From researching your target market and competitors, you should be able to build up a targeted keyword list, with the help of the Adwords Keyword Tool, to advise you of the popularity of particular keywords. These keywords form the basis of your search engine optimization campaign.

Something else that you need to prepare for in your SEO campaign is the creation of content for your site. This needs to be well thought out and keyword-dense in order for it to be beneficial to your campaign, and of interest to your target audience. High-quality, interesting content is instrumental in your rankings as it is regarded very highly by search engine robots, so this should be catered for in advance.

Your strategy may change throughout your campaign (with the development of the industry you are operating in, new business offerings and so forth), and for each change to your strategy you should consider each of these points. With careful planning comes great success.
