Better SEO content using old tricks

December 6th, 2009 by

SEO content has to achieve quite a lot for the average site. It not only has to fit in with the SEO tactics throughout the site, it must convey the appropriate business message and at the same time engage the site’s users in a way that will encourage them to return. This high level of expectation is a lot to ask from a series of words, and is why many businesses opt to engage their SEO firms in the development of their content.

As owner of the site, you have the ultimate control over the content which appears on your site. The personality of your business will also be a big factor in the creation of your site’s content. For some businesses, this means quite serious content that can sometimes fail to engage the reader as it should. Naturally, this is not what you want for your business, but how to avoid it?

Sometimes, the oldest of tools are the best. When it comes to writing, a little attention to the methods used by writers since written English came into being is very useful. This is even truer for internet writing than it is for print. Language in print tends to be a lot more formal and older structures are observed. On the net, users expect informality and a sense of connection. The language users themselves use is what a keyword list is based on for search engine optimisation. The language of content needs to match this in order for keywords to blend seamlessly.

A friendly tone can be highly effective. For example, the use of personal pronouns when referring to your site’s users is one way to develop an instant connection. Just as with the article you are reading right now, using words like ‘you’ and ‘us’ means that the author is connecting immediately to the reader in a very personal way. These kinds of pronouns shoot a line directly between the thoughts of the writer and the reader, over which ideas will flow more freely.

Metaphors and similes can hit the target. Metaphors and similes paint pictures in the reader’s mind that not only make an article interesting; they transmit the message of an article in a more direct manner. For example, in the above paragraph, the metaphor of a line between writer and reader was used. Metaphors can be used to create quite vivid pictures that transmit a message at an almost subconscious level. Similes are extremely useful for demonstrating similar ideas, such as comparing social media to a real-world party.

Real images can make a great deal of difference. You can further solidify the imagery used in your content by posting it with an image. This also helps to break up the text to make it more readable.

When approaching content for your site, it’s a good idea to consult with professionals, and we can help you with content at SEO Consult. Before you discuss content creation with your consultant, you need an idea in mind of the specific type of content and what tone it should take. It can also help to have some topics in mind.
