Google TrustRank And Its Relevance To SEO
October 6th, 2008 by Dan
While it is only one factor many that is used to calculate your eventual search
engine position, TrustRank is a representation of the level of trust that Google
places in a site. There is perceivable way to measure the TrustRank of a page
but most of the actions we take during an SEO campaign are geared at least
partially towards the improvement of trust that Google has for our pages. For
example, link building indicates that other websites have a lot of trust in
the content we provide and Google basically soaks up a little of that trust
into their own view of that page.
Consider Relevance
Many factors are used to help determine the position a page is displayed in
the search engines. The problem with many of the Ranks and numerical representations
of such factors is that they do not consider the importance of relevancy. That
is, no matter how good your TrustRank, no matter how many links a web page
has, and no matter how incredible the content, if somebody conducts a search
for a keyword that is deemed as being entirely irrelevant to the content of
your site then you obviously won’t rank highly in the search results.
Aiming To Improve TrustRank
With that said, improving the factors that are believed to influence TrustRank
will help improve your rankings in searches that are relevant to your page.
For this reason, a lot of weight should be placed on the following factors
especially during the lengthy, ongoing SEO tasks that will keep any SEO, whether
professional or amateur, busy for a long period of time.
Link Profile
Your link profile is one of the biggest factors in determining TrustRank.
Not only does Google consider the number of links but also the relevancy of
that link (that is, whether it is from a page on a similar topic and using
relevant keywords in the anchor text) and the value that Google has placed
on the linking page itself. The more links your pages have and the better the
quality of those links the greater your TrustRank should be.
Unfortunately, though, things are never quite that black and white in SEO.
Google is known to look for evidence of unnatural Link Building. Too many links
gathered too quickly, too many links from bad neighbourhoods, and too many
irrelevant links may not only provide less benefit but many harm your long
term SEO efforts.
Other SEO TrustRank Factors
Google will also look at factors such as the age of your domain and how long
it is registered for to consider whether your website is a long term project
or an attempt at short term unethical gains. The relevancy of pages, keywords,
and your entire site is also taken into consideration along and it is widely
accepted that Google keeps a record of at least some of these TrustRank measurements
over an extended period of time so that they can continue to use their findings
to offer you a realistic TrustRank for each of your pages.
