How do I get my new site off the ground?

February 15th, 2010 by

The internet is just like any other space in the world. The people who are old-established have a much better time of it than new young things. Anyone who has had to deal with search engine optimisation will know that the relationship search engines have with a site takes a while to get warm. Brand-new sites are at something of a disadvantage.

There is nothing you can do about being new. There are things you can do to ensure that your SEO is off to the best start possible. This will cut down the waiting period while your pages are indexed, checked and ranked. This will hopefully result in a better ranking.

The first thing you can do in this way is to work SEO into the foundations of your site when it’s being built. Unfortunately, not many sites think to do this in time. Doing things like placing keywords in your URLs and setting up your navigation so that it is search engine-friendly are far easier to do while your site’s under construction. It’s a good idea to talk to an SEO expert before your site has been built. You can talk to us at SEO Consult about building search engine optimisation into your site’s foundations.

Another thing you can do is get to know some influential people. Getting links from extremely popular sites will count for a lot when it comes to how the search engines judge your reputation. Although your SEO company will pursue links for you in the course of your optimisation, using your own contacts means that double the work is getting done. Even if you can only get one link from an old friend, if their site has been around for years and has a relevance to your business you’re on to a real winner.

It’s important to note that links from other new sites are useless for your SEO. They are also easy to get. Seeking one link from an old site is a better use of your time than getting 100 new sites.

A lot of the things you can do for your new site are more along the lines of ‘things not to do.’ The search engines are suspicious of any site that hits the ground running too hard. The distrust of new sites comes from the tendency for new sites to be spam-filled fly-by-nighters. The behavioural pattern of spam sites is to net hundreds of links, juice up the pages with every SEO point possible, hit the search engines hard and then disappear once the search engines catch on. This can get the spam site high rates of traffic for a few weeks, which is all they want. When you copy this behaviour, you look suspicious.

The other major thing you can do for your new site is to follow SEO rules, and this is best done with the help of experts. Avoid duplicate content. Don’t stuff keywords into your pages. Keep your code clean. Perform your regular SEO and don’t get impatient for results.
