Lesser-known SEO myths

November 18th, 2009 by

There are as many opinions on the proper way to go about SEO as there are internet users. Or at least that’s the way it seems sometimes. This has led to a large amount of disinformation on search engine optimisation strategies. Some of the ideas draw people in because they sound logical. Others just sound silly.

‘You can cash in on all keywords if you post your site to multiple domains’

Despite hundreds of experts advising to the contrary, there are still some businesses out there who believe that setting up a site on multiple domains will be of benefit. In the long run, it’s not. Acquiring domain names that are similar to yours or have relevance to your industry is a good idea. Setting up mirror sites on these domains will create duplicate content issues that can bring down the ranking of all of the sites, your main one included. The solution to this problem is often a redirect from the alternative names, ensuring that all users land on the one central site. This also saves you wasting effort maintaining several versions of your site.

‘In search engine submission, less is more/more is more’

Many people believe that submitting your site to a search engine too many times can either boost or destroy your ranking. Neither is precisely true. No-one knows really how search engines react to constant submission to a site, but their behaviour suggests that there are strategies to deal with too-frequent resubmission.

‘Search engine submission should be done frequently’

Submitting your site over and over again to the search engines is a waste of energy. Submission to search engines is not an issue that all SEO pros agree on. Some argue that a site shouldn’t need submitting at all, as search engines will stumble across it naturally. Most SEO experts agree, however, that it’s worth taking the trouble to submit a site when you’ve just gone to the trouble of optimising it. It’s also worth re-submitting when you make changes. Otherwise, just trust in the organic nature of search.

‘Any link is a good link’

Luckily, most site owners have come to realise that the quality of the links to their site reflect the quality of the site itself. Some sites do still make the mistake of linking everywhere they can, and this can affect their ranking. The best strategy is to link to good neighbourhoods that will be attractive to your target users.

‘Finding your link in a link farm is the end of the world’

Nothing is the end of the world with a site. Search engine results and the strategies to alter them are changing constantly. The search engines allow for mistakes, and there are processes to address having your site readmitted to a search engine’s index. When something goes wrong, the first thing to do is find the problem. The best scenario is to fix the issue, then approach the search engines for resubmission, and in this it is important to have the right help. Approach us at SEO Consult if you face these issues. If your link has been listed without your permission, it may be difficult to get it removed. Search engines have dealt with sabotage tactics since the founding of the SEO industry, and have ways to fairly deal with the situation.
