In order to outperform your major competitors through Search Engine Optimisation you will firstly need to identify them. By typing in your top selling product in Google, you can gauge an idea of who is currently your primary target. When you have done this it’s wise to look at what methods they have used.
There is nothing stopping you looking at your rivals page source, so go in and have a good look around. What are their keywords, how often is each keyword mentioned throughout the page, look at their H1 tags, title tag and meta description and take as much information from them as you can.
Secondly establish their PageRank, this gives a good idea their authority and therefore how difficult they’re going to be to defeat. Thirdly look at your rivals inbound linking details, this can give an idea of the kind of numbers of backlinks you will roughly need to beat their listings. It will also give you an idea of what directories they have been submitted to, such as the Yahoo! Directory and DMOZ, if they are in these directories it is a wise move to try and get your site in as well.
Its amazing the amount of information you can groom from competitors websites, it is all valuable as to what you need to achieve in order to outperform them. Research them and all the other top sites and repeat their methods and you will see an upturn in your listings on the major search engines.
