Perfect ways to hide from the search engines

September 15th, 2009 by

Most of us can think of quite a few times in our lives we do not want anyone to find us. Hiding from obnoxious people is a blissful experience, but hiding from the search engines is incredibly bad. Yet there are many website owners that do an incredibly good job of hiding from the search engines and as expected, their online presence suffers greatly.

So it would be a good idea to stop doing the things that hide your website from the search engines. You need to be as visible as possible if you want your target traffic to come to your website.

Help your target market find you

You need keywords to help with the identification of what your website is all about. Your keywords are also your guidelines for creating content that is relevant to your subject. You also have to add keywords to your Meta tags. Think of this as the roadmap that your site visitors must use to find you. You cannot depend on your content to describe everything to the search engines.

You need to do descriptions for the search engines. Descriptions also give you the perfect opportunity for adding relevant keywords. If you do not use a descriptive title, you will have confused site visitors playing guessing games. To reach your target audience you need those relevant keywords, descriptive title and content description.

Never neglect Alt attributes

Alt attributes makes your website more accessible to your site visitors. You need to use Alt attributes for those visitors that for whatever reason have images turned off. Neglecting to do this shows that you do not care to make your site as user friendly as possible. You are also losing out on a keyword opportunity if you do not use Alt attributes.

No time for putting your feet up

If you think that you can relax and put your feet up once you have generated your site content and added relevant images, you are sadly mistaken. No matter how well written your content is, you will have to make constant changes. You need to freshen up your content regularly with new offerings or the search engines will label your website as being stale and not current. When this happens you will slide downwards in the ratings fast.

Optimisation is a never-ending task and the only way for you to keep track of what your target market wants is site metrics. Only tracking your sales through metrics is not enough. You have to use full site metrics to keep up with changing trends if you hope to keep your business healthy. The above points are critical to make your website as visible as possible. Without this your website is doing a perfect job of hiding from the search engines and your potential clients.
