SEO: Living at the Right Address

February 13th, 2010 by

Imagine leasing a new space for your business. The dimensions are perfect. The rooms are perfectly laid out to appeal to your target market. You arrange your stock carefully and your paths are guaranteed to lead people to the items they are most likely to buy. You put a well-designed sign in the window and shingle on the door. You organise a few well-phrased advertisements and reviews. You’re ready to open.

If your new space is on a high street or just around the corner for one, this story is highly likely to have a happy ending. If, however, you’ve leased at the wrong address, somewhere unpopular or hard to find, your careful preparations are going to come to naught. Nothing you do will be able to save your business from floundering if you’re at the wrong address.

Any SEO expert will be able to tell you what an effect your page addresses have on your ranking. Having a good domain name is a good start and is a step that most businesses intuitively make for themselves. There are other aspects of your page addresses that can counter even the best domain name choice.

Canonical URLs

Sometimes, the search engines are able to find your pages in too many places. This can be as confusing as not being able to find them at all, and just as harmful to your ranking.

The search engines are fairly canny about spotting the connection between www.joe.com and plain joe.com, but some sites still encounter problems when they attempt to use all of the possible versions of their domain name. The main problem in terms of SEO is that using more than one domain splits your traffic and link values. This can be fixed by implementing a 301 redirect on the non-main domains and informing the search engines of which domain you prefer.

Canonicalisation can present problems of its own, and it’s a good idea to talk to an SEO consultant about this issue. You can discuss this with our experts at SEO Consult.

Dynamic URLs

URLs that are the result of dynamic content, or content that is retrieved according to a request, present a big problem for SEO because the search engines are unable to follow them. In terms of our metaphor, a dynamic URL is like setting your shop up in an attic that’s in an apartment building that’s down an alleyway in a minor suburb. You can write out the address as carefully as possible, but it’s still very difficult to find.

Many sites feature dynamic URLs because they are the result of some very attractive technologies. A retail site would be lost without its shopping cart, a forum would be impossible to navigate without threads, and a business would lose valuable information without session IDs.

There are a number of URL problems a site might face, and they are likely to come up during the optimisation process. The best thing is to avoid these problems, but if you do encounter them, don’t panic. A little research will provide the solution.
