Some Of The Old Tricks Are The Best

May 6th, 2010 by

When you’re performing search engine optimisation on your site, you need to know every trick in the book. Not only are you competing with other businesses for attention from the search engines, you’re up against the search engines themselves. You need to be wily, creative, and have experience on your side.

The last of these can be acquired when you hire an SEO company, and you can talk to us at SEO Consult about your needs. Otherwise, you can learn from others with experience, such as the many wonderful SEO blogs around the net. Some of these forget to mention the older tricks in the optimisation book. Here are just a few of them:

*Groups of information on your home page. When users come to your home page, you want to keep them there. At the same time, you want to advertise everything about your business on your home page. The answer is to design your home page in a way that easily delineates groups of information. The most common trick is to present several boxes of information around the page, such as a news box, an introduction box and a highlights box. Don’t try to set out too much information on your home page or you will overwhelm your users.

*Low prices in title tags. If your prices are among the lowest in your industry, advertise them. Pay-per-click advertisers have noticed that advertising prices in their titles increases clicks dramatically. Make use of your prices when optimising your title and description tags.

People continue to be attracted to a bargain, regardless of the industry you are in. It’s important to note that the way you present your price is important, depending on the personality of your site. If you’ve created a professional, elegant website, sticking a ‘SAVE SAVE SAVE’ banner in flickering primary colours could put your target user group off. You can talk to us at SEO Consult about analysis of your target user group.

*Something for free on your home page. Even more than people love a bargain, they love something that comes for nothing. If you have anything that is offered for free on your site, even if it’s a downloadable PDF textbook, make sure it is displayed prominently on your pages. It might make the difference between user retention and bouncing users. It’s best to ensure that the free item is of some value to your user group. It should go without saying that internet users are highly cynical about anything that’s free or a bargain, so be careful with your presentation.

*Trigger memory of your URL. If you want people to return to your site, it’s important that your site’s address is easy to memorise. Getting a good site address is vital for your search engine optimisation as well, and it’s a good idea to include keywords if you can. Trigger memorisation of your URL by displaying it. Don’t forget to include the ‘www’ to make it clear that it’s a URL.
