The no-no’s of Search Engine Optimisation
September 25th, 2009 by Nick
Search engine optimization has everyone’s tongues wagging these days, it is simply the buzzword on every internet user’s lips and even more so on the lips of website owners. As a website owner, it is important to not only know what search engine optimization is. You also need to know how to use it, what to do and what not to do.
The most important thing to know about is what you should not be doing in order to keep you out of trouble. Being in trouble with the search engines is a hugely problematic position to be in. After all, the search engines are all powerful and, essentially, they control your online universe. Once you earn yourself a bad reputation with the search engines, the damage is so to say permanent. They may allow you back into a good ranking position, or not. They won’t forget about your trespasses and will hold it against you in future too.
Content don’ts
When it comes to your website content, there are a few don’ts that you need to take heed of. Plagiarism is one of them. Not only is plagiarism illegal and not only does it have possible nasty legal ramifications, plagiarism is also seriously frowned upon by the search engines. Just don’t do it, keep your content fresh, new and unique to keep everyone happy. Another content don’t is offering valueless, irrelevant content. If the event, product launch or promotion you are talking about happened several months ago, don’t talk about it.
Find something up to date to talk about in order to keep traffic interested. Make sure that your articles are well written so that they are informative, interesting and worth the time to read. One more thing is to make sure that your content is relevant to your website. If you have a gardening website, stick to gardening and plant related topics. Even if a cosmetic surgery scandal in Hollywood is drawing traffic to gossip sites in droves, you must not be tempted to include articles on it.
Don’t get trigger happy with keywords
There are so many people under the misconception that stuffing keywords into every inch of your content will afford you better ranking through SEO. This is entirely untrue. The search engines have smartened up to this trick and now discourage it. So how are they going to stop you from trying it anyway? Well, they will simply mark you for keyword stuffing and will not afford you a favourable ranking position.
At least not until you clean up your act and carefully position each keywords without going overboard. There is a saying that if you can put the word ‘too’ in front of anything, then it is not good for you at all. ‘Too’ many keywords is a content and website rank killer.
Do not ignore a helping hand
There are search engine optimization tools available today. Do yourself and your website a favour, do not ignore those tools. They are a great helping hand in getting your optimization on the right track and they make your life a whole lot easier.
