Where To Start With A Search Engine Optimisation Project
July 27th, 2009 by Nick
SEO is an integral part of creating great web presence. Without the help of Search Engine Optimisation, you can forget about being noticed by the cyber public and surfers. The best option is to get professional help. However, it cannot possibly hurt you to know what you want and how you want it done to conform to SEO so that you ensure the best ratings you can get for yourself.
Build it from the ground up
Having your website built is a great idea, you need to make sure that content is king of your website design and makeup. Using template websites is neither professional not conducive to high SERP rankings. They also limit what you can or cannot do with your website and they are generic, nobody likes generic and generic doesn’t attract attention.
Unique attracts attention. You need to use ALT tags for all your images throughout your website. Use keywords in strategic positions including in your anchor text. Web crawlers and search engines will pick up on your keywords and that helps you get better ranking positions. Use keywords thoughtfully, strategically and in moderation. Weave them into your content, anchor text, image tags and everywhere applicable. But, be very careful not to overdo the keywords. Keyword stuffing is frowned upon by the engines and crawlers.
Overdoing and duplication
As with everything in life, it is important to approach SEO in moderation. Gorging your website on SEO tactics, without knowing whether they are truly suitable or not, is a bad idea. Keyword stuffing and going overboard on the SEO front is not going to get you recognised faster. Nor will it do so more effectively than if you took to your SEO with moderation. The key in making SEO work for you is to carefully find out which tactics and strategies are suited to your site.
Take the time to figure out what is really applicable to your specific website and its unique set of needs and then cater to those needs in moderation. It is also a bad idea to duplicate content on your website. Not only will it not enhance your popularity with the crawlers and search engines, it won’t do much to impress your human web visitors either.
Duplicating content on multiple pages and cause confusion with the bots and crawlers as to which one is more important than the others. If you need to use the same content, for whatever reason, use canonical URLs.
Get Direction
A great way to boost your SEO is to get your website onto directories. Choose whichever directories will service your needs best, but get onto directories without fail. Directories are also great for giving you much needed exposure. Exposure begets greater web presence and web presence is a powerful ally to have for a commercial website.
Use trusted directories to give you good exposure and to enhance your good reputation. Siding with the wrong directories that offer poor service will not get you the exposure you want. Even worse, if their reputation is not the best they will impart that onto your own website.
