Finding Your Feet in Social Media SEO
December 19th, 2009 by Jon
A lot of businesses have begun to work social media marketing into their general plan for the internet. These campaigns can be aggressive, or just a gentle part of the main strategy for search engine optimisation. The success or failure of a long-term social media campaign rests on the business’ ability to grow alongside their customers.
The social media available on the net has been recognised as a valuable resource for business, and rightly so. In the real world, it’s incredibly difficult to infiltrate social circles with business messages. Usually a major investment is involved, going toward an expensive branding campaign that may or may not catch on. On the net, social marketing is open to a business of any size. Success relies not on budget so much as a genuine wish to engage with internet users.
The first stage of a social media marketing campaign is the most difficult. There is less known about building popularity on social media networks than there is about building ranking for the search engines. The main advice most SEO professionals will give you is to study your target users, study the networks and patiently participate. This last point is vital, as impatience can ruin a social media campaign thoroughly. Although there is a bit of advice out there on building your presence on social networks, not many experts really consider what should happen once the campaign is established. If social media is a symbol of your relationship with your customers, the way you act in that relationship as time goes by needs to change. As your authority builds within your particular niche, the need for your business to prove itself will diminish. Your interactions on social media sites will become less introductory and more part of an ongoing conversation.
An introductory stage is necessary when approaching social media, as there needs to be some recognition that you are the new kid on the block. Some businesses make the mistake of holding on to the introductory stage for too long, resulting in their authority in their niche being undermined. After the first few weeks of a social media campaign, the focus should shift and your posts and interactions need to take on the confidence of an experienced participant. Your self-confidence will feed the confidence in you from others.
When your business has an established following, it’s time to shift focus. Those who come to your blogs, join your MySpace page or read your Tweets are already sold on the subject. Even newcomers will be more suited to your specialist focus than they would be in the initial stages. This means that discussions should be posed in a way that will appeal to those experienced in your subject, with the assumption that they already know what you’re talking about.
As your social media campaign continues, remember that those who are passionate about your chosen niche will not need to be won over. Engage with your audience with confidence and their confidence in your business should increase. Talk with us at SEO Consult about incorporating social media into your comprehensive SEO strategy.
