Is The Daily the Future?
February 6th, 2011 by John M
We know a lot of journalists who are out of work, sadly. Not through any fault of their own. The recession has left a deep wound on the entire print industry from which it may never recover. But maybe it’s been an overdue affliction, because the power of online content was leaving some large publishing houses with tough calls to make. The majority were happy to sit in silence, and were cautious about accepting change. Either that or they didn’t know HOW to change.
One new venture emerging from its cocoon is ‘The Daily’, a digital newspaper from Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation which has recently been released for the iPad, costing consumers 60 pence a week. That’s currently a cool 99 cents for customers in the US, where The Daily is currently only available, and is available for download over Apple’s iTunes platform.

It sounds tasty – The Daily will offer personalised content, the latest news, HD videos and social media options, such as placing Twitter feeds into certain content. So what’s The Daily’s voice, and what are Murdoch’s expectations?
“Our target audience is the 15 million Americans expected to own iPads in the next year. In the tablet-era there is room for a fresh and robust new voice. New times demand new journalism.”
Jobs are being created, and Murdoch’s empire is growing. To us though, we feel this is a large railroad spike being driven into the ground for the future of online journalism and digital content. We’ve already highlighted how journalists are using SEO techniques in their content to rank higher for news stories.
How will The Daily treat its link building strategies to get more online exposure for the venture? Or is it going to rely solely on word of mouth and iTunes advertisements? We’ll have to wait and see. We’re convinced though, that this is a big step forward for the future of the journalism industry.
