Off-Page SEO with On-Page Techniques: Five Tips to Digg With

February 8th, 2010 by

If you’ve been looking around the net much in the last five years, you’re probably already encountered the social bookmarking site Digg. Although the site is more popular in tech circles, even non-techs have been dipping their toes in the waters of Digg. After coming to popularity a number of years ago, Digg remains a significant influence on the net, and Digg results frequently appear in the search engine results pages.

The concept of Digg is fairly straightforward. Users Digg pages that they like, and the pages that have the most Diggs make it to the top of the list. If you want your content to be seen by thousands of internet users, making it to the top of Digg’s list is a great way to go. Asking for help from your search engine optimisation consultant is a good way to begin, as most SEO professionals are personally familiar with the site. You can talk to our experts at SEO Consult about this. You don’t have to be an SEO expert, however, to appeal to Digg, just a little knowledge of how the site works.

Here are five top five tips for Digg:

  • Remember your SEO. Digg may be a different kind of website, but search engine optimisation techniques still hold some sway. It is thought that Digg users behave the same way when reading web pages as other internet users. Optimised titles will still convince them whether or not to commit to articles, and keywords are still of central importance to indicate relevance
  • Timing is important on Digg. Timely pieces of content are important no matter which area of the internet you’re trying to appeal to, but as the internet becomes swifter, even the time of day of your post is beginning to count. If your Australian site is aiming to appeal to UK Digg users, it’s a wise idea to hold off your posts until your readers are active. Users tend to be active in the usual peak hours of the net, work hours being particularly popular for social media sites
  • Consider your topics carefully. Some subjects are popular on Digg, and some are highly unpopular. In fact, Digg users have been known to band together to bury articles from particular industries so deep that they never see the light of day. It’s a good idea to research what topics work on Digg
  • Plan for virals. Although articles pushed to the top on Digg may not necessarily have a viral spread across the net, the strategies for viral campaigns can help your Digg appeal. Pay attention to things like what types of content have viral appeal, and what title formats are likely to be picked up
  • Get Digg buttons on your pages! This is by far the best way to hint to readers that you want to appeal on Digg. Not only is it a sign to Digg users that you’re possibly one of them, it opens up the chance for your regular site users to do you a favour and vote for you
