The Secret To Social Media Success

February 12th, 2010 by

The ultimate purpose of a social media campaign may be to get internet users back to your site, but it’s not usually that easy. Although your search engine optimisation consultant will do the best they can to drag social media users back to your site, you need to build a presence on the network first. What this amounts to is a mini-SEO campaign within the social media networks.

Many businesses overlook this need, but you may find it’s the secret to social media success. It’s important to keep these things in mind:

• Use SEO within the social media. The SEO tactics you employ in your social media campaigns should not be all connected to your site. If you want your campaign to succeed, you need to build up your profile pages within the social media site itself. This means using the SEO methods that work for that site. For example, a Facebook profile and news feed items will be ranked much like your pages are ranked on Google. Your Facebook profile will be open to keyword placement, links and meta tags, just like your site

• Post links to your profiles on your home site. Social media optimisation, or SMO, is gradually becoming a standard element of SEO. Posting social media features on your site is seen as a good way to attract social media users without engaging in a full campaign on a social media network. This attention goes both ways. Posting links to your social media profiles on your home site when you are engaging in a social media campaign supports your social media campaign. It creates a stronger connection between your site and your social media profiles; giving the social media profiles a better chance of success. Ultimately, it benefits both your site and your campaign

• Use various social media campaigns to support each other. The social media don’t exist in isolation of each other. Although you may have planned an attack on one site in particular, it’s a good idea to weave interaction between several sites into your plans. This can add interest to your campaign. Social media users are used to jumping, for example, from Facebook to You Tube, so make use of this fact

You can also use other social media sites to wean your followers off the particular site of your campaign. For example, if your Twitter followers get used to checking out You Tube posts you’ve cited, it will be a little easier to get them to check the video on your site later on.

Know when to stop

Your social media campaign won’t succeed without interesting content that’s presented in an eye-catching way. Present too much eye-catching content, however, and your followers won’t be motivated to move on to your site. Learning how to spark significant amounts of interest and tempt users back to your site is a matter of experience, and it can help to get expert advice.
